Chapter 7

Kelly and I decided to follow Sam to the scene. We’d planned to pay Harry a visit today and were still planning to do so, but it was early in the day, and my gut told me that Harry’s situation and the body on the beach would somehow end up being related.

“Male, mid-thirties, stab wound to his mid-torso,” the deputy who’d first responded to the call filled Sam in once he’d arrived. “The coroner is on his way, but the guy has been in the water for a while. At least a week, based on decomp.”

“Did the man have an ID on him?” Sam asked.

“No, sir.”

“Can you get prints with so much decomp?” Kelly asked.

“It’s highly unlikely. Given the damage to the victim’s face, I don’t think we’ll be able to ID him based on his facial features. Perhaps dental records, but DNA will probably be our best bet.”

“Should we bag him?” the deputy asked.

“Let’s wait for the coroner to take a look. He’s coming from Sea Haven and should be here shortly.” Sam looked toward Kelly and me. “I doubt there is anything either of you can do here. I think it would be a good idea for you to go ahead and meet with Harry and then come back by my office when you’re done. I’m hoping that by that point, I’ll have an ID and maybe even an official cause of death.”

Kelly and I agreed with Sam’s plan. There really wasn’t much either of us could do that Sam and his men wouldn’t be able to handle on their own, and we really did want to work with Harry today. I hoped that the dead man on the beach didn’t prove to be a match for the blood on Harry’s shirt, but deep down in my gut, I just knew that would end up being the case.

“This doesn’t look good for Harry, does it?” Kelly asked as we drove toward the hospital.

“No, it does not,” I answered. “I guess we don’t actually know that Harry is the one to have stabbed the man who was found on the beach, but it seems unlikely that the blood on Harry’s shirt and stab wound suffered by our murder victim won’t turn out to be related.”

“Should we tell Harry about the man on the beach?” Kelly asked as I merged from the highway to the road leading toward the hospital.

“No. Not until we know that the blood on Harry’s shirt matches the man on the beach. In fact, I think it might be best that we don’t even mention that a body was found. We had a plan to stimulate Harry’s memories going into today, and at this point, I think it would be best to go with that strategy. I’m afraid that if he hears about the man who was likely stabbed to death, he isn’t going to want to dig around looking for a memory that may very well land him in prison.”

“If the blood is a
