Chapter 7
Kelly and I decided to follow Sam to the scene. Weâd planned to pay Harry a visit today and were still planning to do so, but it was early in the day, and my gut told me that Harryâs situation and the body on the beach would somehow end up being related.
âMale, mid-thirties, stab wound to his mid-torso,â the deputy whoâd first responded to the call filled Sam in once heâd arrived. âThe coroner is on his way, but the guy has been in the water for a while. At least a week, based on decomp.â
âDid the man have an ID on him?â Sam asked.
âNo, sir.â
âCan you get prints with so much decomp?â Kelly asked.
âItâs highly unlikely. Given the damage to the victimâs face, I donât think weâll be able to ID him based on his facial features. Perhaps dental records, but DNA will probably be our best bet.â
âShould we bag him?â the deputy asked.
âLetâs wait for the coroner to take a look. Heâs coming from Sea Haven and should be here shortly.â Sam looked toward Kelly and me. âI doubt there is anything either of you can do here. I think it would be a good idea for you to go ahead and meet with Harry and then come back by my office when youâre done. Iâm hoping that by that point, Iâll have an ID and maybe even an official cause of death.â
Kelly and I agreed with Samâs plan. There really wasnât much either of us could do that Sam and his men wouldnât be able to handle on their own, and we really did want to work with Harry today. I hoped that the dead man on the beach didnât prove to be a match for the blood on Harryâs shirt, but deep down in my gut, I just knew that would end up being the case.
âThis doesnât look good for Harry, does it?â Kelly asked as we drove toward the hospital.
âNo, it does not,â I answered. âI guess we donât actually know that Harry is the one to have stabbed the man who was found on the beach, but it seems unlikely that the blood on Harryâs shirt and stab wound suffered by our murder victim wonât turn out to be related.â
âShould we tell Harry about the man on the beach?â Kelly asked as I merged from the highway to the road leading toward the hospital.
âNo. Not until we know that the blood on Harryâs shirt matches the man on the beach. In fact, I think it might be best that we donât even mention that a body was found. We had a plan to stimulate Harryâs memories going into today, and at this point, I think it would be best to go with that strategy. Iâm afraid that if he hears about the man who was likely stabbed to death, he isnât going to want to dig around looking for a memory that may very well land him in prison.â
âIf the blood is a
